Familial Breast Cancer guidance from NICE

Breast cancer is the most common cancer to be diagnosed in the UK.  As GP trainees it is highly likely that patients – especially those with a family history of breast cancer – will present to you concerned about their risk of developing breast cancer.  The latest guidance from NICE comes at a time when managing the risk of developing breast cancer has been highlighted by Angelina Jolie and her decision to undergo a double mastectomy. The guideline specifically covers the criteria for referral from primary to secondary care (see pages 16-19).  We will leave it up to you to decide how useful this guidance is in practise.

Other themes to consider include the influence that celebrities have on patients’ health seeking behaviours and patients’ perception of risk.
